ロシア正教会の公式祷の一つ「徹夜祷」は大晩課と早課と一時課を組み合わせた祈りの形式。聖体礼儀を準備する盛儀でもあり、様々な作曲家が曲を付けています。なかでもこのラフマニノフの曲が最も演奏機会が多く、彼自身も「自らの葬儀では第5曲を使用してほしい」と懇願したほどの力作です。声のみで「鐘」の響きを模索するなど多様な表現が用いられた作品ですが、クリードが率いる南西ドイツ放送ヴォーカル・アンサンブルは、鮮やかな歌い口で曲をまとめています。
