二人の重要な作曲家が合唱作品においてコントラストを見せる興味深いアルバム。すべての音楽分野に楽曲をのこした、アメリカ最初の大型女性作曲家ビーチは独学のひとであった（一方トンプソンはハーヴァード卒にして同校に教鞭もとった）。ビーチのあたたかなロマンチシズムは、「ピアノ五重奏」（DCA932）に感じることができ、またここに収められた６つの宗教曲（３つがア・カペラ、３つがオルガン伴奏）でも大いに堪能することができる。第二次大戦中に没した時すでにビーチの純血ロマン主義は時代遅れになっていたし、その後４０年生きたトンプソンの、のん気でおしゃれな新古典主義も注目を浴びなかった。だが、いまやビーチは大作曲家と呼ばれ、トンプソンの「脳天気スタイル」はもてはやされるようになったのである。
