これまでウワサにはのぼっていたものの、聴く機会のなかったクーベリックとデンマーク放響1959年の第9がついに正規発売となりました。クーベリックは1958年のイスラエル・フィルとのライヴを皮切りに、59年のロイヤル・フィルとのセッション、70、75、82年のバイエルン放響、74年のニュー・フィルハーモニア（いずれもライヴ）と、今日6種の第9録音が世に出ていますが、このデンマーク放響とのライヴはクーベリック45歳の若さ漲る熱演で、トスカニーニを思わす推進力にぐいぐい引き込まれます。もともとクーベリックはライヴで燃えるタイプですが、まさにエネルギー炸裂、彼のどの録音より演奏時間が早いのも注目ですが、音楽が走らないのがさすがと申せましょう。クーベリックといえば、マーラー、ブルックナー指揮者として名高いですが、このベートーヴェンも、時にブラームスやブルックナーのように響き興味津々。ことに聴きどころは終楽章で、「歓喜の歌」のメロディが最初に弦楽器で提示されるところの絶妙なテンポと歌い回しはクーベリックならでは。歌手陣も素晴らしく、ことに若き日のヘフリガーの美声に酔わされます。CDには合唱団の表記がありませんが、デンマーク放送合唱団で、北欧合唱団ならではの透明な響きも魅力です。経年による音の古さはあるものの、素晴らしい音とダイナミックスが再現されていて、この伝説の演奏の凄さを満喫できます。
