フロリダ生まれの作曲家スプラットランの「IN MEMORIAM」。スペインのマヤ文明征服とその犠牲者に捧げる50分を超える大作です。スプラットランは学生時代はオーボエを吹き、エール大学ではヴォーカル・アンサンブルに参加、卒業後はアマースト大学で教鞭を執り、大学のオーケストラを数年間指導しました。1975年から歌劇の作曲を始め、2000年には「Life is a Dream」でピューリッツァー賞の音楽部門を獲得、以降、優れた声楽曲作曲家として活躍を続けています。
