巨匠ベームの体力気力が最も充実していた60年代初頭の第九が二種類。冷たい炎というのか派手な表現は決して見せないものの、一瞬たりとも気が抜けない緊張感が持続し、叩きつけるようなティンパニの迫力、煽り立てる激しいアッチェレランドは鳥肌ものです。後年の録音に見られるモタモタと鈍さが嘘のようです。バイロイト・ライヴは戦後ではフルトヴェングラー、ヒンデミットに次ぐ「第九」演奏。フルトヴェングラーに拮抗しうる快演です。開演前のファンファーレも収録。モノラルながら良好な音質です。ベルリン・ドイツ・オペラ管とのライヴは出演歌手提供によるテープからの復刻とのことで、非常に良好なステレオ録音です。音が濁ったり、アンサンブルが乱れたりするのを意に介さぬ、情熱溢れる演奏です。二つの演奏が同年ということからも生涯を通じて、最も充実した年だったのではないでしょうか。

テンシュテット＋ミネソタ管の第9が登場。ロンドンフィルとの二種のライヴは、まさにフルトヴェングラー以来の振幅激しく、肺腑を抉る名演でした。当盤は、その実力がアメリカで開花した充実期でミネソタ管主席客演指揮者としての登壇。煽り捲り、一瞬の弛緩も許さない大熱演です。レイミーの歌唱は陶酔的で、ちょっと引いてしまいますが、特筆すべきはミネソタ管の上手さ。考えてみればスクロヴァチェフスキに鍛えられて、テンシュテットが客演なのですから当然かもしれません。

生誕200年を記念したモーツァルト・イヤーの1956年。3月のニューヨークでは、モーツァルトの十字軍であるブルーノ・ワルターによる一連のコンサート並びにオペラ上演(伝説の魔笛もこの月の演奏)が開催されました。中でもソニー録音セッションと並行して行われた「モツ・レク」ライヴは、幻の演奏で今回が初出となります。音質も年代としては良好であり、冒頭の入祭唱などは哀愁漂うしみじみした味わいですが、演奏が進むにつれて、合唱の厚みあるハーモニーを得てウネリを増して行き、「怒りの日」に至っては熱くなるワルターらしい激しさで、表現行為、演奏行為としての「レクイエム」であることが分ります。歌手陣もソニー盤と同様であり、共に演奏を繰り返した演奏家同士による自然な流れを感じさせてくれます。マーラーの第4交響曲は、ワルターが偏愛した名曲であり、多くの録音が知られております。ワルターは1950年の8月、9月、10月と欧州を単身廻り、8月末にはウィーンフィルとザルツブルク音楽祭で当曲を演奏、9月末にはベルリンフィルと戦後唯一の共演を果たします。当演奏は、珍しくフランクフルト博物館管弦楽団（フランクフルト歌劇場のオーケストラがコンサートに出演する際の呼び名）に客演したコンサートです。音質が驚異的に鮮明であることが推薦に値するところでして、きらめく様な弦楽器の輝かしさには感嘆の一言です。晩年に見せた止まるような遅いテンポによるロマン的表現は、ここにはなく、自在な変化をつけて結構ドラマティックな盛り上がりを作っております。第3楽章の美しさには筆舌に尽くしがたいものがあるとのコメントをMEMORIESより得ております。

ワルター・コンダクツ・ブラームス巨匠ワルターにとって、モーツァルトと共にその演奏活動の中核を為していたブラームス。独特の温かみを湛えた音色と爆発的な感興の発露は、今なお聴き手を感動に誘います。特に「ドイツ・レクイエム」は、スタジオ録音を一度しか残さなかったものの生涯演奏を重ねた得意曲であり、英語歌唱というハンデを乗越えて、しみじみとした味わいと動的なアプローチが見事に決まっております。ロサンゼルスフィルに客演したハリウッドボウル、夏の音楽祭におけるブラームス・プロも木管の瑞々しいロスフィルの音色を活かした名演であり、既出のどのCDよりも音質が良い所が嬉しい限りです。
