今、イギリスで最も注目されている若手作他家の一人、マクミランの宗教作品。作曲家マクミランはスコットランド民族主義者であり、時には政治的なメッセージを発する硬派。熱心なカトリック教徒でもある彼は1990年代から集中的に宗教作品を発表、ここにおさめられたミサもそうしたものの一つで、西暦2000年の、ミレニアムの祝典のために書かれたもの．このミサの作曲を委嘱したのは、ここでも歌っている英国の名門、ウェストミンスター大聖堂合唱団。この他、マクミランの近作の宗教作品が収められている。どれも強いメッセージを放つ、ギラリとした音楽。

ジョージ2世、国王に即位！ 18世紀の戴冠式をリアルに再現した、音のページェント！ヘンデルの名作《戴冠式アンセム》（全4曲）を中心に据えたディスクだ。しかし、それだけではつまらない。ということで、1727年、このアンセムが作曲されるきっかけとなったイギリス国王ジョージ2世の戴冠式の「式次第」すべてを音で再現したドキュメント。この頃のヘンデルは、ロンドンに居を構えて14年が経過していた。《リナルド》から始まり《ラダミスト》《オットーネ》《ジュリアス・シーザー》《タメルラーノ》《ロデリンダ》など、オペラのヒット作を次々と連発し、作曲家として不動の地位を築き上げていたヘンデルだが、ちょうどこの戴冠式の4ヶ月前にイングランドへの帰化が認められている。帰化後ただちに王室礼拝堂付作曲家、および宮廷作曲家に任命されたヘンデルにとって、ジョージ2世の戴冠式は初の大仕事だった。オペラ作家として国民的な人気を得ていたヘンデルの新作が新国王のためのアンセム！ 一般聴衆のヴォルテージが頂点に達したのも当然である。その公開リハーサルは、混乱を恐れて日程を公表しなかったらしい。にもかかわらず、口コミだけでとんでもないくらい多くの群衆が押しかけ、ウェストミンスター寺院始まっていらいの人出を記録したという。しかしながら、直前に式次第が変更されたことによる混乱など、様々なアクシデントにより戴冠式本番の演奏は、あまりうまくいかなかったと伝わる。それでもアンセムの1曲《祭司ザドク》は、冒頭の霊感豊かなクレッシェンドと、トランペットを伴う、息をのむような7声の合唱の登場により、多くの人の心をつかんだという。そしてこれ以降、イギリス国王戴冠式の際に必ず演奏される曲として定着した。この18世紀の一大ページェントを、当時のウェストミンスター寺院の鐘の音色にまでこだわって再現した、画期的な企画である。
