ハウェルズに音楽を学んだイギリスの作曲家シンプソンが生涯に残した作品は多くない。彼の代表曲といえば交響曲があげられるためにここに収録されている作品は貴重。(1)は1958年の作。(2)は混声合唱とプラス、ティンパニーのための作でテキストはシンプソン目身によるものをラテン語に翻訳。(3)は良く知られているアレグロ・グラツィオーソなどのイタリア様式に沿って作曲されている。(4)はシンプソン唯一のオルガン作品。

イギリス作曲家ヒュ一パート・パリーの世界初録音による珍しいオラトリオ。 Ｈパリーは作曲家としてだけではなく学者、教師でもあり、イギリスの音楽だけでなく教育・文化の面においも活躍。彼のカンタータ“解放されたプロメテウス”が音楽祭で演奏されると、その水準の高さにイギリスの各地の音楽祭から合唱曲の作曲依頼を多数受けるようになった。今回のオラトリオ“ヨプはパリーの中期の作で１８９２年の作。同・作曲家エルガーのオラトリオ“ジェロンティウスの夢”（１８９９‐１９００年作曲）などを始めとする作品に多くの影響を与えており、イギリスのオラトリオの中でも特に重要視されていたが今まで録音される事はなかった。

キリスト教徒、イスラム教徒、ユダヤ教徒の聖都とされているエルサレム。その意味は中世のライターたちには“ヴィジョン・オヴ・ピース”と信じられていた。ここに収録されている作品は十字軍の時代に北フランスで作曲された単旋聖歌集であり、戦争の悲惨さを反映するとともに平和を切望する思いが込められている。

スベイン作曲家ゲレーロは１６世紀後半のスペイン教会音楽においてビクトリアに次ぐ大作曲家として活躍した。ここに収録の作品は１５８４年に出版された祈祷集からのもので彼の先輩作曲家に捧げられた作品。録音の非常に少ないゲレーロの作品を知るには非常に貴重。

ネーデルランドのオルガニスト、作曲家、教師であったスヴェーリンク（１５６２‐１６２１）の最も重要な声楽作品集であるくカンッィオ・サクラ集＞がついにハイペリオンより発売。この作品はカトリックの典礼に由来する歌詞を用いたモテットであり、彼の友人であり弟子でもあったコルネリス・プレンプに献呈された。スヴェーリンクの教会音楽の録音は非常に少ないだけに貴重盤といえる。
