ハウェルズに音楽を学んだイギリスの作曲家シンプソンが生涯に残した作品は多くない。彼の代表曲といえば交響曲があげられるためにここに収録されている作品は貴重。(1)は1958年の作。(2)は混声合唱とプラス、ティンパニーのための作でテキストはシンプソン目身によるものをラテン語に翻訳。(3)は良く知られているアレグロ・グラツィオーソなどのイタリア様式に沿って作曲されている。(4)はシンプソン唯一のオルガン作品。

イギリス作曲家ヒュ一パート・パリーの世界初録音による珍しいオラトリオ。 Ｈパリーは作曲家としてだけではなく学者、教師でもあり、イギリスの音楽だけでなく教育・文化の面においも活躍。彼のカンタータ“解放されたプロメテウス”が音楽祭で演奏されると、その水準の高さにイギリスの各地の音楽祭から合唱曲の作曲依頼を多数受けるようになった。今回のオラトリオ“ヨプはパリーの中期の作で１８９２年の作。同・作曲家エルガーのオラトリオ“ジェロンティウスの夢”（１８９９‐１９００年作曲）などを始めとする作品に多くの影響を与えており、イギリスのオラトリオの中でも特に重要視されていたが今まで録音される事はなかった。
