　ヘンデル（1685-1759）：オラトリオ《メサイヤ》

シックスティーンは、指揮者ハリー・クリストファーズを中心にケンブリッジ、オックスフォード両大学出身者の音楽家たちによって1977年に結成。1992年には4月には《メサイヤ》初演250周年記念ツアーを実施、わが国にも訪れた。ヘンデル自身、1741年作曲のオリジナル通り演奏したことがない《メサイヤ》は、歌手陣容などの制約からダブリン初演版、ロンドン初演版、捨て子養育院版などの様々な版があるが、クリストファーズは特定の版に固執するのではなく、全ての版を子細に検討、全曲の推移を鑑みつつ、各曲についてどの版を選択するか決定していったという。その成果はこのディスクに収められている。
