KINOSHITA Makiko was born in Tokyo. She is active as a composer in
wide range of genres including orchestral, band, chamber and vocal music. Her
vocal music in particular has become enormously popular. She has hitherto given
five concerts entirely of her own work for varying ensembles. The concert
featuring her orchestral works given in June 2019 was particularly successful.
She gained her first and second degrees in the Faculty of Composition at the
Tokyo University of Arts, graduating top of her class. One of her works was
selected in the orchestral composition section of the Japan Music Competition
and another for the composition prize of the Japan Symphony Foundation. She was
awarded the Encouragement Prize in the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Music Awards.
Among her major works are the opera Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a Piano
Concerto, Lux Aeterna for orchestra, Gothic for band, The Sun
Organ for chorus and orchestra, the musical tale the Spider’s Thread, Fragments of Time
for marimba and piano, and Puzzle for two pianos. Much of her work is
available in published editions. Her work has also appeared on several CDs
including Orchestral works: The Breathing Earth (Octavia Records), Chamber
Music Works: Another World, and Piano works: A Circuit of Dreams
(both on Live Notes).
